What Order Do Skincare Products Go In?
You've found products you like. You're using them consistently. But your skin still isn't quite where you want it.
Sometimes the issue isn't what you're using. It's the order you're using it in.
Why order matters
Every product is designed to do its job in a certain place on your skin. Some are thin and meant to absorb. Others are thicker and meant to sit on top, sealing things in or protecting your skin.
If a thick cream goes on first, a lighter serum applied after it may struggle to reach your skin. And if your sunscreen goes under your moisturizer, it can't form the even protective layer it needs to work properly.
The good news: one simple rule covers almost everything.
The simple rule: thinnest to thickest
Apply products from the thinnest, most watery texture to the thickest, richest one.
Think of it like getting dressed: lighter layers first, heavier layers on top.
In practice, that usually looks like:
Cleanser
Toner or essence (watery)
Serum (thin, targeted treatment)
Eye cream
Moisturizer (cream or lotion)
Sunscreen (morning only, always last)
Your morning order
Morning skincare is about protection.
Cleanse (a damp washcloth is usually fine in the morning)
Targeted treatment
Eye cream
Moisturizer
Sunscreen
Sunscreen is always the last skincare step. If you wear makeup, it goes on after your sunscreen has settled.
Your evening order
Evening skincare is about cleaning and repair.
Cleanse (if you wear tinted moisturizer or makeup, double cleanse: first with a cleansing oil or balm to break down makeup, then with your regular cleanser)
Treatment or serum
Eye cream
Moisturizer
Many targeted treatments, like retinoids, are designed for evening use. If you use a prescription product, always follow the instructions from your doctor or pharmacist.
Common mistakes to avoid:
Putting sunscreen under moisturizer
Think of your sunscreen as a shield. It needs to be the top layer to protect properly, so moisturizer goes first and sunscreen goes last.
Layering too many active products at once
"Active" products are ones designed to change something, like acids for exfoliation or ingredients for breakouts or dark spots. Stacking several at once is one of the most common causes of irritation. More isn't faster.
Rushing between steps
Give each layer a moment to absorb before applying the next. Thirty seconds to a
minute is usually enough.
Using face oil too early
Oils are thick and can block what comes after them. If you use one, it usually goes near
the end of your evening routine.
The bottom line
When in doubt, go thinnest to thickest, and in the morning, finish with sunscreen. That one rule fixes most routine-order problems.
If you're unsure whether your current products work well together, or whether you need some of them at all, a second set of professional eyes can save you a lot of trial and error.
